definitely gonna need a locker, but what all your gonna need really depends on where your planning on going. you don't only need a capable vehicle, but also enough fuel and water, camping gear, etc...
are you wanting to do an expedition, or just a weekend run? what kind of area/ terrain are you looking at? I highly recommend looking at the turtle expeditions website, as they have listed what they have done to all their trucks. (plus they are ford sort of people!)
I guess I used to do that sorta stuff in my old 2wd ranger up in the hills and loggin roads...Had it "outfitted" with a 3000 pound harbor freight atv winch and a case or two of beer...
lol, we used to call that Saturday... if you want to get technical, an overland vehicle is capable of driving long distances being self sustained. for example, one of the turtle expeditions drove across russia.
