What blows is I just got my father on the same page as me saturday, and found that truck sunday; I was 40 minutes from montrose saturday morning, had I noticed it prior and he had been on my page, we could've driven my jeep and potentially traded.... oh well, maybe if it's there next week and my Jeep is ready to trade I'll call them up and see if they are interested and find somebody to split gas with me down and back...
At the risk of rubbing salt in a wound, yet another from Montrose. I hesitate to post it as it is sold but this shows you what is out there, dont settle for a high priced beater if you can help it:
Looks like the hunt can slow for awhile. I know I still want one, but my father wants to buy my jeep due to some emotional attachments we have to it; so I have to wait for his business to start turning profit. Still going to keep an eye on the ones I love in the event they aren't sold by then, maybe get a good deal.
Sounds like you know what you want. But if i may throw in a tidbit. If its a highboy you want then 76 and up is what i would suggest. They usually have the big hub 44 up front with disc brakes. The 60's in the rear are pretty strong if you stay with factory power.
But watch out for u-joints. Especially the ones in the intermittent driveshaft. If you decide to go this route just remember that regular servicing and maintance is your best friend.
78-79 is also a good year for the f-250 and f-350 as these aren't "highboys" but still good trucks. The 351m and 400 are good engines. I use to get 13-15 mpg with my 400 on 31's with 3.73 gears driving it like my grama of course. But it still was able to pull anything i put behind it.
Good luck with your search and hope this helps a little.
