I was looking for a way to paint my old grill since I installed the chrome one. I was going to do something in red white and blue. But when I was looking for the paint, I found something cooler.
It's the chameleon paint you see on cars that changes color as the viewing angle changes. It comes in little spray paint cans for small projects. So for $20 and an hour this afternoon, I was able to do this.
There are three steps: Base coat, color, clear coat. I gave a light sand and clean to the grill before the first coat and masked the emblem. Then I waited 5 to 10 min inbetween each coat. Each step requires 2 coats. I recomend getting 2 cans of clear coat. That way, you can really protect the finish.
Tell me what you think.
I chose copper to green. I'm also thinking about painting other pieces of plastic like the stuff below my bumper. Or maybe the mirrors, who knows?

The paint looks incredible in the direct sunlight. It turned into a BRIGHT METALLIC GREEN. I know it's a bit funky on the white truck, but what the heck. It's so easy to change. And being a professional painter and all, I know how to remove it and start from scratch.
Another idea I had was to put back my chrome grill with the stainless steel inserts and paint the lower valance and bug shield white. Or I could do everything gloss black.
Either way I go, all it takes is a couple of hours and the right paint. And if I don't like it, it's easy to change. Now the sheetmetal, that's a different story. I've been wanting to do some wide stripes that follow the curves of the hood and fenders. I was thinking of using black and gold because those are the company colors. But for now it's low buck experimenting
A freind of mine has a cobra, red w/ white stripes, he bought a red SD and had the same white stipes put on the truck.
It was kind of cool when he was trailering the car.
I think it looks good and will probably look even better if you put those stripes on. Maybe one of the colors thats in the grill could roll back over the hood line???.... just yappin.. looks good!!!
I like the grilles I've seen where the chrome is masked and the flat grey areas painted the same color as the body. I'm going to do this with the paint I have left over from the clear bug sheild that I painted the back side of to match the truck. You can do the same with the flexable plactic parts around the bumper but you should buy a paint with an additive made for flexable stuff so it don't crack when flexed. Any good automotve paint store will mix you a quart of your color and for a few more bucks load it into an aerosol can for ya...it make about three cans worth.
Oh by the way...I'm new here and have already learned a bunch about my '01 F250 PSD. Thanx to all those who post info here!
