Ok, so I've searched for this, and only found that a 302 pilot will work? But is this for T5, or older T18 or 19? I have the right T18/19 400m bellhousing, just need the pilot. The trans.is now bolted to 390FE, and I was planning on using the clutch and flywheel from 390.
The 460 is out of 77 econoline van, so it should be internally balanced. 390 and 4spd, are from late 70's F100 or F150.
I know the best way is to measure trans input shaft outer diam./ engine crank inside diam. And go from there. I was hoping someone has done this and knows, to save me time. Thanks in advance
hey Bronco im in the process of just getting started in the swap .your bellhousing from a 351m/400 is it cast or aluminum or does it matter? thanksdave

Reason: wrong spelling
So it looks like I'm laying the groundwork, I looked into the "rumor" that the 302 pilot will work. I was worried about the differences between trans, but it seems to be like the ford starter, and all are same, it says "all ford v8, scout t-18". The inside diameter of 302 bearing is:0.672" the inside of 390 is:0.67. So there's even a difference of 0.002 for clearance. I can't find any 460 outside diameters, but the 302 is:1.378". I heard it seats deeper in crank so, I'm sure its not the same. I'll keep this updated as I progress. 3 weeks from now till I start)
I'm doing this swap from c6 to NP435 with a 460 in mine. I got a 351m/400m bellhousing, don't know about the pilot bearing but I am using a 460 flywheel.
Should start it in a couple of weeks or so. It's gunna be beast yo!
390 Clutch and flywheel work, 460 starter works on 390 flywheel, (390 has 3 hole mounting pattern). 302 pilot does fit, in deeper recess of crank, and does make up for the depth difference in 400 bellhousing. I measured from inside edge of bellhousing to end of crank, and its 6" even, same on trans, (inside lip of bellhousing, to tip of trans input shaft.) I know its slightly more on engine, as my tape measure is about 3/4" wide, so touches outside edges of crank, not the actual deepest point in center. I could use a wooden dowel and mark it and measure if anyone wants EXACT measurements, but regardless its a greater distance than the length of the input, and that sufficed for me.
Now, to clear up the INCORRECT info some have posted:
-the 2 hole ONE piece 390 motor mounts are ABSOLUTELY IN NO WAY interchangeable with the TWO piece 3 hole 460 mounts! Someone incorrectly stated "the two holes on the 390 mounts line up with two of the 3 460 holes"
Now some random observations:
-The upper water neck also needs changed, and i hear a 400m one works. 460 is way too small.
-lower outlet from water pump is on same side, and appears will work
- The heater hose locations are very similar and should easily reach.
-distributers are NOT interchangeable, neither are most engine parts except fly, clutch, it appears alternators, and obviously carbueraters, air cleaners, breathers, ect.
-the 400m bellhousing has center spacing (trans side) of 4 3/4"
-the 390fe housing has center spacing of 5" (this is very scary at first glance, but before machining it out, try it on, mine fits, 390 just has 1/8" gap all around)
-exhaust manifolds exit REARWARD on 390
-exhaust manifolds exit DOWNWARDS on 460
HUGE OBSTICLE:
-the clutch fork mounting point from 390 bellhousing is NOT the same as 400m.
-it is cast iron, so must be heated prior to welding, if changing that way
-it is mounted using 2 spot welded/rivet thingys, that may be drilled and reinstalled using bolts?
-the fork, rubber boot, throwout should interchange, if mount is changed.
NOT SO HUGE OBSTICLE:
-sheetmetal plate from 400 should be used, (my bell did not come with one)
-460 mounts starter lower than 390, so hole is not far enough out and must be removed, NOTE: if cutting out plate to mount starter, as i did, be sure to use washers on INSIDE of starter (between starter and bell) to mimic thickness of plate, so starter will not engage too far, (from being mounted deeper). I have bolted it all together on floor, and hooked up to battery to ensure it does, and it DOES work
Next step, i will be drilling the 3 holes from 460 pattern INTO the 390 mounts. I will be sure to share info if this works.
Compared to the L&L mount, mine appears to have the stud slightly higher, mounting the motor lower, which isnt an issue, since im fabbing a new crossmember to hug the pan for more diff. Clearance.
Then again the L&L mount is for 70's Bronco, mine is 89. Who knows, mine may fit fine, if not, i'll just weld a stud wherever needed on a 1/4" plate, and use a round universal poly bushing.
