I have a 2002 ford 7.3 diesel and i done a couple of things to it like a straight pipe and taken the insalation off of the pipe coming off the intake. I was wondering if there is any other things that i can do to it that will boost the power a little without buying anything for it right now. THANKS
Taking insulation off will lower the power. Not in the amount that you might notice, but Ford put this insulation for a reason.
Welcome to the forum and visit the engine section for more details.
"Power loss" is based upon physics, and the amount of loss or gain may not be felt, even though it is there all the same.
The insulation on the intercooler inlet tube is there to minimize the absorption of heat from the engine bay, and it also has a side benefit of reducing turbo whistle as well. If the air coming through that tube heats up from the surrounding engine bay heat, then it will expand in volume and therefore begin to impose a limit on the air flow through your system.
The reverse situation is to use a water/meth injection system which actually cools down the gases flowing from the turbo into the intercooler, and this reduces the amount of back pressure which the turbo is having to work against to shove air into your intake plenums.
All this works because colder air takes up less volume (is more dense), and therefore allows your turbo to push more lbs of air (oxygen) into your engine. Anything which allows your incoming air to heat up will result in some amount of power loss, even if you cannot feel it in the seat of your pants. Conversely, anything you do to cool down your air intake will result in increased power, again, even if you cannot feel it in the seat of your pants.
I took the insulation off for more turbo noise which helped but i dont think it was worth the work. This is my first diesel so i dont know much of what to do to them for more power. I am going to get a cold air intake and a aftermarket turbo later but for now i was just wondering if i could do little things to it to give it a little.
Don't use the K&N airfilter. More then one person found out the hard way. Also when it get wet it will block air to the engine. I had a freind have that problem when towing and finally got rid of it.
