Question First Heavy Pull

Well last Saturday bought a toy hauler in SC and headed back to central IA that afternoon with the new to us toy. It's a Heartland, Cyclone 35 foot bumper pull T/H. tag says dry is 9000 lbs, max GVW 13,000.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
Did avoid going back through the mountains went to Atlanta then north out of there. It was certainly all my non tuned truck wanted, she ran good worst fuel was 8.9mpg best was on the flats at 11.5 keeping in mind it was all Lie-O-Meter readings so it probably was a bit less.<o></o>
Observation: You can't use cruise control, it would gouge the throttle at any small grade & downshift twisting the tac to 28 or so did not like that but it could easily maintain speed there, Just made my butt pucker twisting it that tight. So I stopped using cruse except on long flat runs.<o></o>
Question does anyone like Matt or Jody do just transmission tuning only?
And any downside to trans tuning only?
I assume I would need to by an SC-3 tuner to download a trans tune if I can get one but I just am pretty leery about tuning the motor as I think I would be happy with the power I have if I could get it to hang in 5th and mash to go pedal a bit a bit further down without down shifting. Or would just bite the bullet and get a tow tune?<o></o>
Currently pricing a CTS with egt probe & fuel psi sender set up.
Oh yea forgot I installed a sinister collant filter set up prior to leaving on trip changed filter when I got home just have not cut it open to see whats there.<o></o>
Hit me with what you think and what you guys would do.

Gees that's a heavy toyhauler! With our bunkhouse (tips the scales at 8500# dry) and the aerodynamics of a barn...I have no problems maintaining 65-70 mph around these parts (a few moderate hills). Were you using the Tow/Haul mode on the on the end of the gear shifter? It will cause the truck to shift differently, but should help the truck pull better. Burning a gallon every 10-12 miles sounds about right for that much weight.

I pull a 14k Alpenlite 5er with no problems just use the T/H and drive the only thing i don't like is the down shifts of the trans in the mountains and the high rpm where my 97 with the PacBrake and ATS converter lockup in the mountains i have to give it fuel or i will slow down. My mpg run 8.5 pulling and 18.4 solo all by hand Get the gauges they are a must if you pull or not. My 06 pulls 95% of the time, my 97 is the grocery getter.
Edge Insight CTS a great tool, get the expandable probe so if you want to add more to it down the line plus you can run 8 things at one time. Most are Free shipping over $50

Lot of guys get the ScanGaugeII to me not as good as the Edge because you can not use the pyro a must if you pull
ScanGauge - Trip Computer + Digitial Gauges + ScanTools
Fuel pressure gauge also a must so you know what your pressure is at WOT because pulling you are in WOT alot.

This is what i got for the fuel pressure gauge, it goes into the test port, this is a cool set up gets the sender away from the heat and viberation of the motor.

How does she stop? Did u get the electric brakes set right? I gotta check mine out, I have the brake controller on 10 gain and that is all the way. And that is the only setting that I feel the trailer grab while creeping

I have no problem at all with my 31' fifth wheel. 11,000 dry weight, probably around 13 to 14 k loaded. I get between 11 and 13 mpg going to the sierras. 11 up and 13 returning. Use the tow haul on grades and 2800 rpms don't bother the 6.0 at all. If climbing a steep grade, don't be shy about slowing to 55 to 60 mph and dropping the gear shift to 3rd. Those gears are there for a reason. Let them do the work, not the engine. By the way, on the flats I set the cruise at 60 mph.

Our 31' 5th wheel is 11,900 loaded. Truck likes to pull it at exactly 2000 RPM which is right around 70 mph. I know that's fast, but it does not like doing less than 65 and feels happiest at the 2000 rpm mark. I have done the same trip a few times at different speeds and I actually get the best mileage at that speed as well. All that is still below the 12,500 weight that the truck is rated for.

Most I have towed was 65k worth of grain to the elevator with my truck. I have a quadzilla module with a fuel setting and towing setting. I agree with everyone the EGT gauge is a MUST for towing. I run a watchdog that monitors my boost, EGT, Engine temp and also will tell you if you have a code.

Letting the 6.0 run to 2800 RPM's is not at ALL a problem. You need to do it much more often just to keep the rust out of the turbo. It likes the RPM's and might actually help your fuel mileage instead of lugging it along like an old school diesel.

Personally I can't wait to tow our trailer this camping season. Always something to look forward to.

Most likely Drumheller a few times, then out to southern BC. We have a membership with Holiday Trails and I want to try their Camperland in Rosedale. Got the waterslides for the kids there. Will travel to Jasper a few times as well. Hopefully be camping every weekend.
