1997 F250, new fuel filter and oil, 254,000 miles. First time this truck towed a trailer, on the way home it suddenly lost all power, RPM's dropping slowly, pedal did nothing, came out of it and drove an hour home. Went to drive to work the next day, and it did the same accept started running like total crap and shut off. After cranking for about 10 minutes, firing randomly while cranking it started back up, misfiring and cleared out, drove home fine. Changed the CPS today, got about 5 minutes away and the same thing happened, took longer to get it to restart. There is no smoke when it's dying, nothing, seems like it's running out of fuel. Other than when it shuts off, it runs great. Going to get a code reader tomorrow, no light though. Any ideas?
I know I shouldn't have, but I got it at crap zone, I will get an International one next week. However it was the exact same problem with both. Just checked the fuel pressure, 65 at idle and around 80 when it is reved up. However, when I took the cap off the schrader valve, it started leaking fuel out. Seriously wondering if it could be getting hot, and bleeding off enough pressure to stall it. With the pressure gauge on it and it not leaking, I could not make it stall after holding it at 1500rpm for 10 minutes. Could something this ridiculous be my problem?
I'd pull the plugs on the valve covers and look for burnt pins an plugs
Also did this, all were clean accept for the front pin on the passenger side rear plug. The male pin in the head is fine, but on the plug looks a bit burnt, I will pull it out of the connector and clean it up/inspect for damage this weekend sometime.
Sorry forgot to mention that when you do the short test; its fine to do it the way it shows, but also run the other lead over to the negative of the batt on the dr side as a extra check.
Ok, got it to die at the shop today. No fuel pressure, maybe 8lbs at the regulator. Will not restart now. I just put a new fuel pump in it maybe 1000 miles ago. I will try maybe running a feed from a diesel can to the pump to eliminate the lines from the tank valve, but visually they look fine. Also replaced the pin that was burnt on the passenger rear valve cover plug. If one of these lift pumps go, is this a normal progression?
If you don't have fuel pressure it has to either be a line problem or a bad pump. I would disconnect the lines in front of the selector valve and stick them in a jar or clean fuel and see what happens then. If you still get no pressure you either have a clog in the line between there and the motor (not all that likely) or a bad fuel pump.
Rock, by the way I love the new avatar you're using. Hopefully that sun is just rising on us and not in the process of setting....
Truck runs fine of a can of diesel straight to the pump. Took a minute or two to clear all the air, then back to 60lbs fuel pressure and running fine. So now it's either the selector valve is not switching to the front tank, which is full, or the lines from there to the pump are perforated or clogged. Going to try filling the rear tank with 5 gallons, because it could be empty, gauge does not work. When I pulled the feed line off the pump it was dry. Happy actually....
