engine knocking

i need help with this please. I was driving my X on the freeway, took my exit i needed and my engine starts to knock really loud. Then my engine stalled. I was able to get it in a parking lot luckily. I tried to start it and it took it awhile to start. I was able to drive it to a buddy's house but i noticed a loss in power. It didn't have the same get up it had before this happened. Please help it is my only truck for my family. Also i have looked into Google about this, a few things and want to confirm it before i start taking this apart. And hopefully its an easy problem but i doubt it.

Loss of power going down the road plus hard starting.

I would look at the alternator. It may be weak or failing and slowly starting to take the battery with it. Have both tested.

I wonder if what you're experiencing is a misfire?

Have you checked the oil level? What oil do you use? Did you have the battery tested as well?

Try to isolate the location of the knock. See if its in the top end or bottom end of the motor and if you can get close to were its coming from.

Then go from there. It will help determine root causes.

I press on the gas and the engine goes down to like 500 rpm and almost stalls. Is there a way to check the oil pump?

Sounds like its going lean. I would check for any fuel or spark issues.

I believe your engine takes 5W-30. My '02 takes 5W-20.

That wont change anything. Most 40s will shear to a high 20 or mid 30 grade anyways.
