Hello everyone, I'm a new Powerstroke owner and have a bunch of Mods planned. Unfortunately it will take a long time!
Anyways right now I'm looking into ways to make my truck let loose some black smoke when I want it to.
I know that these engines are much cleaner then the 7.3 and I know one way to help is to wire a switch to shut off power to the vgt making it spool slower and reduce fuel to air ratio.
What are some other ways that you can think of that aren't very intensive and are controllable. I know there won't be much without modifications.
Thank you!
if u wanna just blow clouds every now and then, which i dont think smoke switches are cool at all, but wiring into the vgt harness is the best way to do this. if not, there really isnt another way. my next guess would be getting an sct x3 with a custom tune that really smokes. just make sure u have gauges, good coolant, good oil cooler, coolant filter and blue spring before you tune it. much more importnat that blowing smoke
Ya I just did a full coolant flush and fuel filter change next up is ccv re routing and blue spring update, if i have time I will do an egr delete and clean my turbo as well as install the new drain line. If i really have time i would like to clean out my oil cooler as well. After that will be studs.
I only want to smoke out when people are being right ignorant drivers (which happens a lot out here) otherwise my main goal is engine reliability which i am focusing on right now.
Well this will be an Interesting thread for shure The Last guy that asked this caught alot of S$!T
Making the truck smoke will only cause Problems down the road
Basicaly you will be coating everything with Soot like the turbo,Intake Manafold, the Sensors in the Intake
The Turbo is the Big one Here problem is once you get a Good coat of Soot on tghe turbo Veins it will cause them to stick and OverBoost. Once you start overBoosting theres a Very Very Good chance you will Blow the Heads/Gaskets
In the End you will only Acheive Catastropic Failure so
add Heads/Headgaskets and maybe a Turbo as well to your list of MODS

Ya i agree its bad for the whole system to do this consistently but that's not my goal, i plan on cleaning the turbo completely and inspecting the canes unison ring gear etc. Thanks for the warning.

Just to clear things up yes I'm new to having a Powerstroke but I'm not new to diesels i am an apprentice HD mechanic. I am fully aware of the effects on these engines and only want the option not to smoke out all the time. I will also be cleaning my turbo and have been doing as much research on these engines as possible.
How did the last guy catch s hit?
he caught crap by asking a retarded question...similar to yours
Diesels have enough of a bad rap...adding a soot blowing switch is just dumb. My truck is custom tuned and I occasionally blow a black stream...but that is wide open throttle
I know if someone covered the inside of my vehicle with soot, that I'd follow them and teach 'em a lesson or 2. With that in mind, I always know where my tailpipe is

Ah ya i totally agree diesels have so much more potential but because of the bad rep that is common in north America they are viewed as crude loud ugly smoky and only fit for industrial application. if we embraced diesel for its potential like Europe does we could make huge leaps in technology and bring down prices.
I am not trying to give them a bad rep or anything and believe me or not the only time i actually want to blow smoke is for people who are genuinely a$$ hole drivers. I have narrowly avoided several major crashes at other peoples stupidity and that's all I want other than an occasional puff to show my friends ( call me redneck but me and some of my friends enjoy it) but I won't be abusing it because I know what it does to the vanes.
I'm not out there to give a bad rep and i understand where your coming from.
