im still looking for a diesel.i am finding most in my price range with about 110,000
to 145,000.i know in the 6.0's maintenance is the key thing but with these miles are alot of the common bugs worked out or if it wasnt maintained could this mean bigger problems.through alot of reasearch and help from this site i know what to look for as signs but i am still worried about getting someone elses nightmare also.thanks in advance
The best way to tell the history of any truck is through an Oasis report (warranty information) and CarFax. With that said, it's really hard to say with a blanket answer if one with 110k to 145k miles is good to go. If the truck was in good shape and the Oasis/CarFax were clean...would I buy one with 145k on the clock? Yip, assuming the following were alright...
*White residue around degas bottle cap
*Color & condition of the coolant
*CAC boot condition
*EOT/ECT delta (would need something like a ScanGauge II to see this)
*FICM voltage (also need a ScanGauge)
*EGR cooler condition
*Oasis/CarFax report
*Cold starting issues?
*Hot starting issues?
*OEM bolts or studs? (look for the bottom row of bolts/studs outside the rocker boxes)
*Aftermarket parts? (intakes, air filters, tuners, etc)...not generally a good thing with this engine
well i dont have acess to scanguage.theres 2 at a dodge dealer near me in pa.ones an 04 going thru shop to check out no price and an 05 this has edge guages on dash that one is 18,000.probably gonna look at them tommorrow.both have 140000 on them.i think my main problem is im reading all bad things but it seems that more people have good luck than bad.
thanks for the info .ill check out what i can and hope for the best
This is just my opinion, if your serous about buying a diesel engine...especially a PSD you need to think about some kind of scan tool about as soon as you buy the truck. These trucks will almost diagnose them selves when you have a problem. A Scangauge is a low dollar investment ($150-ish at AutoZone) that will pay dividends quickly.

The Edge guages aren't something I get excited about, but I'd wonder what else the pervous owner did to the truck. If he was running an Edge tuner on a stock engine/tranny your playing Russian roulette with that one. Keep in mind most of the folks that come to the forums are looking for a solution to the problem they're having. How many folks would spend their time on a forum bragging about how great their truck is? Yes, there are folks that do that, and I'll say my truck is pretty low key as far as some of the rumored 6.0L issues. But generally speaking folks don't spend the time to brag about their trucks...we've all got better things to do with our time. Just remember, the newer the truck, the more expensive the parts/repairs and the worse the EPA crap gets. Personally, I'd go after the '04...but I'm a little bias toward the early 6.0L powered trucks.
thanks for the info.ill have to look into the scanguage.i plan on egr delete if i get one and upgraded oil cooler.the only thing i dont think i could handle on my own are the heads
looked at the 04 tonight it has 141,000 on it.head studs a year ago by diesel shop.unsure on egr ans oil cooler.no white residue around degas cap but dont know if they wouldve cleaned it up or not.did not go through shop for thourough check up.is the egr tube the one that runs on passenger side of motor outside intake?if it is it looks like a new part.no mods at all factory exhaust and intake.any ideas?price is 13,900 tax tags out the door
Personally if I was to buy one from a dealer, it would be a Ford dealer and some sort of esp warranty would come with it. Even if only a 90 day one. A Dodge dealer isn't going to be that up on the 6.0 as a rule.
yeah i am gonna get more service records for it.he is going to get them from previous owner.their are a few minor things i am going to use to bring price down if i go for it.the 05 he reccommended me not to even look at because it was not maintained like this one.the power sliding rear window doesnt move striaght and the lie o meter doesnt work either.they said they will fix everything at above price or negotiate without the little things fixed but will be mechanically checked out.if i do get it i will get guages.there was no steam from tailpipe no white smoke and i took it for a long drive with no fluid leaks when i got back.man do those things run like hell.

Price is a moving target, it will depend on where you live. If you want to know what the fair market value is...call your insurance company. Since allot of folks run full coverage on these trucks, the insurance companies keep up with their fair market value for a set area. The residue wouldn't be hard to clean off of the bottle, look at the "head liner" on the underside of the hood...it may still have residue in it if the degas puked. Not all trucks puke, and some will puke if they're been overfilled (ask how I know this). If there is signs of puking, take note of where the coolant is in the degas bottle. The EGR cooler will be below the intake on the passenger side; but it's kind of hard to see without a decent light. Not sure what what other tube you might be talking about down the passenger side. Let's assume they did the studs right, hopefully they did the oil cooler & EGR cooler while they were in that far.

Take some of the advice already given...DO NOT buy a 6.0 without hooking up a some sort of scanning device with live data....Although they can look great ,seem like they run great,,they can be a time bomb.
If you do not have a Scangage ,set up for a 6.0 or a friend with Autoenginuity.Although a scangage does not have the ability to run any tests..It would be a good idea to find a local ,reputable diesel shop ,that knows the 6.0 ,and have them do a pre-buy inspection....It may cost you some coin,,but ,your about to drop 13+K on a truck ,that could cost you alot more to repair if failure occurs. It would be money well spent.
