I'm new to diseil trucks had mine 2008 6.4 f250 about 3months now and recently noticing white smoke not all the time but maybe 2 times a day and recently noticed a cleaning exhaust filter read out on panel I don't drive the truck more than 20 miles a day around town can anyone explain why I might be getting smoke from my truck thanks for any help
I could mean that you are in the exhaust cleaning cycle or regen of the DPF and due to low speeds and an exhaust that is not that hot you are blowing some smoke.
The regen process works best on the hwy. This motor will be much more effiecient as a hwy or towing motor.
It needs to get up to temps and stay there. 20 miles is actually about 10 miles each way which does not really get things warmed up enough to start the process let alone finish it.
The DPF/regens is the #1 source of all evil in our trucks!!
Regens finish best if you can keep a constant throttle like freeway or expressway driving so the exhaust can heat up and maintain consistent heat.
Stop and go traffic and regens do not mix. The engine will dump fuel out the exhaust in futile attempt to heat the exhaust. If the exhaust isn't hot enough, smoke blows out like pouring BBQ fluid on hot coals. I was behind a guy doing that just the other day, and it smells vicious. It cuts right into the lungs.
The smoking is a common complaint and has a fairly big discussion among other forums as well. I will belch smoke about a minute into regen immediately after taking off from a long light on cold days. Very predictable and it lasts about a minute each time or as soon as the exhaust /CAT heats up again.
there is something wrong with your truck. Good luck to you to get ford or a ford dealership tech to address your problem. They will tell you it is normal.
Your smoking might get worse and you will look like a locomotive train going down the road in a $50k truck and be embarrassed as hell.
The only solution I found was to delete.
The driving until exhaust clean until end didn't help me either. I would go out of my way and drive the 15-20 miles until it was clean but I still looked like a train going down the road. This was when I gave up and deleted.
