Help finding my truck

Hello All, I hope that I am posting this in the right place, if not I apologize. I have been reading a lot of posts, and I think I may get some help here.

When I was 11 I fell in love with the Ford F100 1948-50'. I was lost downtown Detroit during an auto show with my father and I was able to watch an F100 blow the doors off a 69' Vette. Since then I was hooked. We always talked about how we would restore one someday together. Unfortunately he passed last year and we wont be able to do together. I am still going to try to restore one myself with the help of others at times.

Now my question. I have been looking so hard to find something that preferably drives, in my area. If i have to travel a ways to find one thats ok. I live in upstate NY. I am having a hard time finding one remotely near me. Also, I would like to keep around $3,000 if possible so I know it needs work that I will be able to put my hard work, blood, and tears into. Maybe I am asking a lot, but thats why i have turned to you guys for help, I have little to no knowledge on these. I was hoping to learn as I went and go at my pace. If anyone has any ideas on where I can start looking I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Ron

ebay, craigslist, newspaper, friends, and for sure here. 3000? for a truck you can drive safely might be a strech. Good luck.

I couldn't find anything near me either. I went from DC to Ohio for mine. It was considerably more than 3000 and I had to get a u-haul trailer to bring it home. When you're hooked, your hooked.

Thanks guys for the help. I am looking every day for it! I have found some that are across country for around 1500 to 4000, that either run, or need very little to run. BUT does need major restoration in other areas. I don't care if it runs or not because I want to learn and play with it! But I would like to spend 3k or less. Again thanks and I will keep my eyes open for some good deal! I am definitely HOOKED!

Welcome!

Good luck with your search.

Oh yea and just to let you know the 48-50 Ford truck would be a F1 not a F100. That may help you with your search.

Ron,

On the east coast 4-5,000 is about what you will spend , 2-3,000 usually are parts trucks. Here is one that drives (moves)

1950 FORD F1 Pickup

Good luck with your search.

Welcome to the site, Ron. Where in NY?? I'm N of Ithaca currently in VA. I assume you check craigslist. Do you want to stick with 48-50 ? or go up to a 52?

For $3000 you'd be lucky to find a truck that is all there, and not been parted out to some degree. If you found one that runs too you would be extremely lucky, and would of found the 1 person that doesn't know what their truck is worth. 99% of sellers think their truck is more valueable than it is. I would try to find one as complete as possible. Missing parts add up quick, and you could easily spend thousands trying to collect the missing ones. Good luck in your search.

I've learned a lot working on my trucks, and they are easy to work on for the most part. It's nice to have one vehicle that has a simple design in the stable.

Welcome! You are on a noble mission, expect to have both elation and heartache on the way. As others have indicated, eBay, Craig's list, OldRide.com, and your local listings are candidates. Start driving around the back roads looking at the car salvage yards and 'collectors' who often have something parked out front for sale. It is possible to find what you are after. In my case, I found a '49 F1 that 'ran' for less than $3000 just last year - 30 miles from home. Who knew?

Recognize that the buy price is the down payment on the project. Stuff you'll never worry about with a current model vehicle are standard needs with these beauties. I would encourage you to be a regular on this forum, learn how to search topics, and buy a Shop Manual to help with the learning.

Overall, keep at it and enjoy the journey!

Happy motoring!

Thanks everyone! I guess I will have to bump my price up! Thats ok! it is worth it to me! I have posted on other sites and this by far has been the most welcoming!

I am also ok spending up to 5k, but was hoping for around 3 so I could jump right in to the restoration! Also, a 52' would work for me! I just love that generation!

It is also very soothing to hear that its not easy, but its not killer either. I have very little experience besides basic oil, brakes, etc. so this will be a great learning journey!

I am located around outside of Rochester NY in the town of Churchville. Seeing its very rural and on the larger side, I will take the advice of driving around town and looking for a truck that someone may have sitting in their yard and will also check the local junkyards etc. Thanks again for the great advice and warm welcoming!

Ron, I bought a couple of vehicles up your way. Check into joining the NY Chapter.
There was a guy in Waterloo adv on clist a 52 last year. Doubt if it sold, from what a local cop (he went to look at it-he's looking too) told me it was pretty well butchered.

Welcome to FTE.

Good advice on the Shop Manual. Once you know what year it's for, order one sooner rather than later.

I asked several questions as a newb on FTE which were promptly answered, but for which I could have looked up the answer myself if I had the Shop Manual. Now my dumb questions are really dumb! (but they still get answered)
