Anyone out there ever heard of using Redline oil in their PSD? Was talking to a guy who tells me that it beats everything. Was also told to use their products in the tranny and differentals. Right now I use Rotella but thought about going to the new Valvoline Blue. Also, any thoughts about using synthetic oils?
I went by the Redline website and printed their tech sheet. The oils that they have available that are diesel rated for the newer diesels requiring a CH-4 oil is limited to 2, a 10w-30 and a 15w-40. It states that they have a "API Service Class" but does not state that it is actually API certified.Redline is noted for having massive amounts of moly in their oils. That's great if you want to plate up your engine quick. Used oil analysis that I have seen are on gas engines and the results have been erratic. If you want to pay a lot for an oil this is the one. I don't see enough benefit to justify the $$$. Delo 400, Rotella T, and Delvac turn in some mighty fine numbers at a fraction of the cost and properly maintained, your PSD should give you 250,000 miles of service using these oils without breaking a sweat.
I have seen repeated analysis on 2 different synthetics for diesels, Amzoil HDD and Mobil Delvac 1. The Delvac 1 is the same as Cat Synthetic oil but has marker trace elements. Both turn in low oxidation rates, maintain their TBN's for extended drain intervals, but their wear metals are a bit higher than the above mentioned dinos. All things considered, todays dino are very dynamic and the synthetics have been static. Not near the improvement in synthetics as dinos. If you just want to run a synthetic, the Delvac 1 would be my choice.
