Hi, also go to Helm Inc. http://www.helminc.com for the shop manuals and wiring book.
Although, the Haynes and Clymer, and others put out important (read necessary) books. The original shop manuals and wiring diagram books are very important.
The official Ford wiring diagrams have the outlines of the connectors!!!! That is one incredibly useful piece of help.

Right, but the printed wiring diagram book from Helm covers all F-series & Broncos in one diagram set, even though some of the wire colors & circuits are different. To avoid confusion, use the EVTM for the specific vehicle of interest. It shows the correct colors, circuits, and connector faces, but also presents each system in a more logical diagram to make troubleshooting easier. For '92-up, it's included on the Ford (Helm) Service CD.
For pre-'92, check with Helm or eBay for a paper EVTM.
Hi, I did forget to say that the Ford wiring diagrams do (read that alot) of time to understand. Unless you have worked in electrial/electronic "stuff" It will take a very steep learning curve to read them.
That said, the original shop manuals and diargrams are necessary things to have. along with the Haynes/Chiltons....
