I am really stumped on what could be the problem on my wife's '93 Aerostar. The engine starts with no problem and stays running while in park and neutral, but once it's put into gear the motor(and vehicle) jerks and shuts off.
Could anyone give me advice/comments on what the problem could be? Transmission, electrical, distributor problem, etc...???
I've been told that it's the transmission, but I'm not so sure. If it is, wouldn't the motor stay running but the vehicle not roll?
Sounds like what my old Chevy did. The torque converter clutch would get stuck on (valve body problems). With that clutch stuck. Try picking up the drive wheels so they can spin freely and put it in gear and see if it stalls, or if it manages to go. Then put on the brakes and see if the engine stalls. I haven't worked with a stuck torque converter clutch on the a4ld (it has the a4ld, right?) But I would guess it's crud in the valve body. You may want to verify that the computer is giving the transmission the signal for the TCC to disengage before getting too deep into the transmission.
You're the second to suggest picking up the vehicle to check the drive axle. A friend of mine at work gave me that same suggestion, but I haven't had the time to do it. Hopefully, I'll have some time tomorrow.
