Tranny Problem

I have a 52 Ford F1 with a 3 on a tree transmission. The transmission number on the ID Plate in the glovebox is 3. Its a 3 speed. Anyways , when I go to pull it into first , it grinds for about half a second before it locks in. It does this most of the time , even though the clutch is all the way to the floor. It happens sometimes while trying to shift to reverse also. Shifting to 2nd and 3rd is no problem , it shifts flawlessly. Ive tried double clutching , doesnt work. Any help would be nice , thanks.

Tranny Problem

First gear in those transmissions are spur. Most likely the 1st and reverse slider gear is worn. When this is worn usually the reverse idler gear and the main cluster gear are also worn. This is the same with my '51 Heavy Duty 3 spd. I haven't actually used the transmission but I have dissasembled it. My slider gear gears where shaped like a triangle when it's supposed to be like a square. The slider gear and reverse idler gears are relativly inexpensive but the main cluster is a lot more. Up here in Canada I can get the slider and reverse gears for $50 but the cluster gear for $350. It wouldn't be that hard to replace them.

There's probably nothing wrong with your transmission. The clutch is'nt disengaging completly. If you shift into second or third, (to stop the gears) then into first or reverse it should'nt grind.
