Well I have the common studs broken. I'm wanting to fix the problem so I don't have top sit and wait for them to warp so there's less pressure on them. What are the goods and bads about the headers? also whats the cheapest way to get them? Thanks!
Collectors that constantly loosen is not normal unless it is designed poorly. Only thing I do with my headers is a wire brush and some paint a couple times a year. The stock manifolds on the 2V are horrible. The 3V manifolds are far better. On a 2V truck headers are the way to go IMO and you get what you pay for.
One thing about headers, you're going to be working on them at SOME time, unless you go for the super $'s Banks or some other brand.
So, either get under the truck to keep tightening collectors, or keep changing studs.
The stock headers on my '88 Mustang GT have been on there since...well, since 1988 with no leaks or loose bolts, so I don't think it's an inherent problem to all headers Buy ones with a ball-socket collector joint and I doubt you'll see problems

Well, there's "stock" and then there's "aftermarket". I have to keep tightening the collectors on my Hedmans which are ball-and-socket. I'm about to go under there and do something drastic this weekend. Although I suspect it has more to do with my exhaust system moving around more than it should, and the collector "rings" being a bit too flimsy.
Just sayin', there's a chance for a bit more "maintenance" with headers than with stock manifolds.

I'll agree with that. I don't see many guys painting their stock exhaust manifolds like I do my headers. Of course that is optional and a set of stainless headers don't really have to be painted.
My experience with the headers is the bolts will need to be tightened 2-3 times as the gasket compresses. After that they are good to go. The headers on my 74' have been on for like 12 years now and they are the cheapy Dynomax headers.
Just a little header gasket FYI: I have traditional, 3 bolt-flange headers on my vintage Mustang and always had trouble keeping them from leaking. BUt about 3 years ago I bought a set of Mr Gasket's aluminum gaskets. They are just that, aluminum, maybe 1/8 inch thick, and once installed they have not leaked at all, even though they drag occasionally due to the car being low.
anyone use JBA headers? ive seen them online for around 549.00 and i have 2 broken studs 1 on each side? either that or im gonna buy the big money banks and be done? any opinions
thanks
I'm going Banks myself. Just don't see the point in buying cheap n having to worry bout them rotting out. Also, if you do go with Banks, go to a local to you authorized Banks dealer. The over-the-counter price is lower than you'll find advertised anywhere on the net. Helps saves some money.
