Y block generator to alternator conversion
Does anyone have any information on what is involved and what parts it would take to convert my 6v system over to 12v. There are some kits available online but i don't feel like paying 400-500 for it. There has to be a more cost effective way. Id appreciate the help.

How "cost effective" do you want to be? Is this a resto-mod, a restoration, lots of modern accessories, etc?
It's my understanding that a stock 6 volt generator will work well by simply installing a 12 volt regulator. The purists will screech like wounded Eagles, but that's what people used to do. The current output will be reduced, but if you're just bouncing around the farm it probably won't matter a whit. A 6 volt starter will also work OK on 12 volts for many years if the engine is tuned well. The Bendix starter drive might not care for it, but again this is one of those things people did routinely back in the day.

The 57's were 12V if it is an earlier truck I would suggest posting this question in the 48-56 forum as those guys have done lots of 6-12V conversions on their trucks. The short answer is to replace bulbs to 12V, replace the starter (the 6V starter will work on 12V for a while) And upgrade the Generator to a 12V unit or just swap to an Alternator, and add a conventional volt regulator for the gauges.
