with all the debate going on in the country about saddams nuclear capabilities, it dawned on me today how may times a day we hear the word "nuclear" and the two distinct differences in the way people pronounce it. it doesnt seem to be a geographical thing either, people from all corners of the country say it differently than their neighbor. i say it nu-kleer but a co-worker says it nu-ku-lar. i was just wondering how ya'll say it and which one is used more than the other.
btw, this isnt a "im better than you cuz i say it(your way here) which is the right way" type of question. im just curious.
Ice: I am with Dennis. I pronounce it: "Noo clee er" The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language states: "noo kle er" . Regional dialects will change it, but it is basically as shown in the dictionary.
If you GLOW in the dark does that mean you can spell Nookie'klear correctly or what??????------------Question ???Does anybody know what Atoms are made of????Protrons , Neutrons , and Fig-Newtons of course!!!!!fd
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Oct-02 AT 10:17 PM (EST)]I'm not a linguist. My wife says I say it something like nu-cue-ler. and she's a speech pathologist.
Nuclear. Three sylables, nu-cle-ar. There's no way you can justify saying it any other way. I know that president Bush says nu-cu-lar, but's that the trademark of somebody who doesn't know anything about it. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with not knowing nuclear chemistry, 99.5% of Americans (and Canadians) live thier lives successfully without ever having to deal with it, but it never hurts to say it like you know what you're talking about. It's just a pet peeve of mine, but I consider the FTE community a technically affluent group, so listen up Iceman
BTW, it's especially nerve-racking hear Bush talk about nuclear anything nowadays, except if he was talking about the construction of new nuclear power plants, which unfortunately probably won't happen (thanks liberals).

I don't think President Bush's pronunciation of nuclear is indicative of no knowledge of the subject. It's just that some people have trouble pronouncing some words.
I base my theory on the fact the President Jimmy Carter, a professed
"nu cu lur" engineer (US Navy)pronounced it the same way.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Oct-02 AT 07:18 PM (EST)]Websters has .wav files for the three different ways it can be pronounced. Apparently none of them are (incorrect) ways of pronouncing it.
They have .wav's for
Nuclear
Nucleer
Nucular
I think Nucular is something left over from the 50's when people were building atomic bomb shelters and stuff. hehe. I don't really consider either a poor way to say it. It's part of the spice of life.
