I know using lift blocks in the front is considered a no no but has anyone ever used 2 or 3 inch blocks successfully?

Sure, front lift blocks are used succesfully all the time by po' hillfolk. I've even seen them made out of stacked 2x4s...honestly. At least their succesfull untill they spit out underload and you roll your truck. Do it right and either get the right springs are even do something simple like an add-a-leaf.
