I'm sure the additive had nothing to do with it. What did you use?

Engine failure

Hi Johnsdiesel,

I used Power Service Diesel Kleen (silver bottle) in my last three fill-ups. Seems like Stanadyne and Power Service were the two additives that most people had recommended. Also, because it is readily available on the shelf at Walmart.

I had a flat tire on my other vehicle on the way to a wedding and stopped in my local gas station for a quick fix, which they did very quickly. While waiting, I noticed that that they carry Stanadyne Performance Formula on their shelf. I was surprised because I have looked for it at many different places in the area and nobody else carries it. I think I will give it a try, since it comes as the #1 (unofficial) recommended.

They sell it for $8.49 per 16oz. bottle. A little pricey, but anything you buy at a gas station is higher than most other places. But, its not bad for "testing" it out. Thanks for the reply, I'll let you know if I notice a difference between the two products. Take care.

MIke

They have done something about it -- the threw the whole engine out in favor of the new 6.0L engine. The 6.0L engine has a cam position sensor and a crank position sensor. It is extreamly unlikely that both will fail at the same time so if the ECM sees a signal from one and not the other, it will set a code, making it much easier to diagnose. Furthermore, the design of the new system makes the sensors less sensitive and therefore more reliable (less likely to fail in the first place).

Boy I am glad I read this stuff.... this has happened to mee moer than once. I useally just shut off the key and turn it back on while rolling..engine starts right back up and runs fine. Hard to find a pattern as to when it occurs. Although cold damp days do seem to be around when this goes on.

Joe - I'm pretty sure the EPA had something to do with them "throwing out" the 7.3

I just had a problem with my '02 bogging down on a recent couple of rainy days and the dealer replaced the fuel pedal position sensor. It hasn't rained since, so I'm not totally sure this fixed the problem. Probably was coincidental anyway...

The EPA did indeed change the rules for 2003 for NOX emissions but the 7.3L engine was/is able to meet those emissions standards. Ford needed more horse power (I guess nobody ever told them that it is torque that gets the work done) to compete with the 315 HP Duramax engines.

Joe - Navistar was under a consent order from the EPA regarding the 7.3. The motor, in fact, was unable to meet the emission standards, or, more correctly, EPA had a problem with the performance algorithm used to report emissions for the engine family. Contrary to what they (Ford/Navistar) are now saying, that order was 100% of the reason the 7.3 was abandoned.

If they were only looking for horsepower, it would have been relatively easy, and much cheaper, to squeeze more out of the 7.3.

Then why are they still using it in the Econoline which isn't even intercooled?

I would recommend buying a few bottles and keeping them on hand. John Deere sells the same stuff as Ford. I always have it on hand for the tractors, so it works out well for me.
