Tires

I have just acquired a 2000 Excursion Limited which will be used to tow a horse trailer.

Of course, the ride is stiff and rougher than we had experienced with our 1999 Suburban 1500.

Any opinions on whether a change from the stock tire size would favorably affect ride quality, handling, safety (keeping the same wheels).

Thanks.

Stuart

"E" rated tires will hold more load, but have stiffer sidewalls.

"D" have softer sidewalls. Won't hold as much, and might give you a little more rear end sway. Ride will be softer though.

Since your 2000 should already have "D" rated tires, just go buy some new shocks.

Yes. Look at shocks and a rear sway bar before considering tires.

And don`t forget the front bushings, change to Polyurethane(Energy Suspensions). The combination of shocks, swaybar and bushings will tighten up the X.

Seems to be a lot of support for new shocks. Any recommendations?

Who best to install an anti-sway bar? Dealer vs. a truck "performance" shop??

No one has yet addressed the issue of an non-stock tire size...say a 285 rather than 265 .

Thanks.

Rancho
Bilstein
Edelbrock
Monroe

Anyone who works on suspensions can install it. You can do it yourself in about 2 hours, if you want. I wouldn't pay dealer prices.

Thumbs up Tires

My 2002 x Limited came stock with Firestone Steeltex A/T, LT265/75R16
D rated tires which gave a hard ride and bounced over every bump.
At 800 miles I replaced them with Michelin LTX M/S 265/75/16 Load range C and it made a big difference.
I had the tire shop install the Helwig anti sway bar as well.

I just drove my excursion from New York to Oklahoma then to Florida and back to New York,
about 4500 miles within 2 weeks and the tires and sway bar handled well.

I am waiting on the DOETSCH TEC 3000 Shocks I ordered 800-8SHOCKS, they got a good review at: http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/techart...059/index.html

Why would you buy tires that are a lower load rating??

I went with the Rancho 9000's since they are 5 way adjustable. They are great if you tow. Hook up the trailer adjust the rear shocks to 5. Disconnect trailer and set shocks 2-3. Makes a world of difference towing. The first time I towed I initialy forgot about them. But during the first leg of my trip I was woudering why the rear was so bouncy. Next stop changed the rears to 5 and it road smooth.
