So my coolant filter will have to wait a little bit. I have another problem for now. Pulled into walmart yesterday and brake pedal was very hard to push down. My brake light came on and the truck would barely stop. My thought was the brake booster. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
Check your vacuum line to the booster pump first. Make sure its not rotted. Check the vacuum block on the fender well. Then check your vacuum pump. Fire up the truck, pull the vacuum line from the booster and see if you have any vacuum pressure.
I have not had a booster up and die on me, usually they leak down and then stop working. Signs of fluid leaking from the master cylinder to the booster is a precursor in what I dealt with.
yes i have read up on some other forums also and that is what they are saying also. If the brake light comes on it is a sign of the vacuum pump. thanks for the help
Yes my light is only coming on intermittently. I pulled hoses off this weekend and the pump is working but not sure how much vacuum it is supposed to produce. It did not seem like that much to me. All hoses are in good shape and have same pressure all the way to the booster. If it happens to be the pump is there one that is better than the others. When it comes to brakes and pulling a fifth wheel down a grade a little extra money spent for a good one would not bother me at all.
I'm not sure if one is better then the other. My last one was from advance auto because I could hardly stop my 5th wheel. It was a good place to pull over and fix it. Both of mine were on and off before complete failure. I've read what the vac should be but have forgotten.
A good pump should pull somewhere between 17 and 21 inches..Mine was down to 10 and it never did light the brake light , but the brakes were rock hard. I got the pump from Advance because they were close and they had it in stock.
