I have asked here before about headers for a 1984 1/2 ton pickup 2 wheel drive.
I noticed an page 144 of LCM catalog #FD 29 that they sell a set of headers for a 80-82 with a 400 engine, had anyone tried them ??
Thanks
Jim
You'd be better off asking about Hedman Hedders in the exhaust section of the forum as a general question on the company's reputation concerning quality. You're not gonna get any good answers on HP gains here since most of our 351M/400 guys haven't really rebuilt their motors to net them any respectable gains.
Well, I am a header hater. No matter what car or truck I use them on, I have always had trouble with them. You can't get to the starter and it overheats the starter and it won't start in hot weather. Sometimes you can get to the spark plugs, sometimes you can't. There is no where to mount the dipstick tube unless you rig something. They hang too low and get in the way of tranny maintenance. And if you get the cheap .042 thick headers, they rust out if you drive in the salt.
I can pretty much guarantee you will have at least a couple of the problems above, even though I have never used them on that engine in these type trucks. As far as power gains, I have never noticed a lot, but it does make the exhaust sound louder.
No header manufacturer will honor their warrenty on the headers if you wrap them. It disintegrates the metal in the headers.
Unfortunately, when I was searching on Google last night, I couldn't find any good pictures of starter wrap that allowed you to see what the heck was inside, so I settled on the header wrap picture since it's a similar idea. Wrapping the starter is a possible solution, or even some kind of heat shield.
BTW, most of the cases I've heard about concerning headers and no-starts were on GM and other vehicles with Solenoids mounted on the starter. I've never really heard about the starter itself heating up.
HI Shaun
Thanks for the info as I am new here & did not know there was an exhaust fourm.
I bought this 84 step side & am redoing it a little with a 400 & an AOD
again Thanks
jim
One, 1984 trucks shouldn't have a 400 in them. Only options available in an F150 were the 300 I6, 302 V8, and the 351 V8. There may have been a V6 offered too, but we don't really talk about that mistake of a motor here. If the motor was swapped in, check to make sure it was done correctly. Many times, different year and/or originally unavailable engines are made to fit any way they can go in, which isn't a good thing if you're a stickler for originality.
Two, the AOD should have a small block transmission bell housing pattern. The 400 has a big block bell housing pattern, and it lamen's terms, an AOD will not fit a 400 without an adapter. Check to see if maybe you have a C6.

X2! And, when he says 351 he means the W, not the 400's little brother the M. Check the valve cover bolts. The 400 or 351M should have 8 and the W should have 6.
HI:
Thanks to all but when I built my "T" bucket I put a 400 in with a c-4 & did like it so when I wanted to do the 84 I bought another 400 & had it gone thru & the bought bell housing to mate the 400 to the AOD & am having a shop do the AOD now & I am the going to put the 400& the AOD in the truck. It took me a year & one half to build the "T" bucket & I still have it .
Again Thanks as I am learning more about this Fourm every day with a lot of good help.
Jim
I have the flowtech headers on my 400. They are like $125 brand new with gaskets, collecters, etc. They can be bought @ auto zone...should be able to get these for about any truck or engine.
