Does anyone own a Oly AR? They now offer a model .223 Plinker that has the 16" barrel and sells for under $600. I have always wanted an AR and this looks like a good deal as far as AR's go, any helpful info good or bad? Thanks!
Thats not a bad price for an AR! I have a few friends that have Olympic Arms rifles and they have no complaints other than keeping them clean while shooting them. I have a Colt National Match AR and i have to do the same thing,AR's tend to want to jam after about 30 rounds due to snug tolerences. I have an SKS and a AK that i use for plinking,They're built loose and you can run a bunch of rounds thru them before you have to clean them.
I've heard the Olympics are as good as most ARs - to be honest with you, I don't think there's too much of a difference other than brand name (they all have the same molds and such for parts, it just has a different company name on it).
I personally would rather buy the Olympic AR-15 and have a little gunsmithing done (polish this, file that) than buy a perfect Bushmaster for $1500.
i own a COLT AR-15 .223 H-BAR with a detachable carry handle and a Luepold 6.5-20X40 scope.
I LOVE THIS GUN.... ill own it til i die if theres anything i can do about it.
as for a jamming issue- mine NEVER has... ill go through 200 rounds in a 1/2 hour without any problem. ( oh wait- an aftermarket magazine was crap and made it jam- no problems with any other magazines)
now- my only insight on the Olympics AR15s is- make sure the magazine chamber will hold double stack magazines- ( high capacity) like 20,30, ad 40 round clips. other wise you might have a hard time selling it, and might dislike having low capacity clips
BuiltToughF250 yours is similar to mine, And i love mine too!Your lucky, with mine i usually have to use the forward assist after about a hundred rounds(i made a mistake in the # of rounds in the earlier post). However i have been told that using reloads could be part of the problem.
We get a few AR's in the shop every month with the biggest thing being a quick polish in the chamber. They are made quite well, the bushmasters are about thye best AR copies out there. They are considerably overpriced and you are paying for a name they are worth more like 1100.
I went with the Colt AR based on reputation. It was the best $900 I ever spent. H bar, .223, 1 : 9 twist, new in box. The ballistics on the .223 are kinda nice too; a good flat shooting round. I will never sell this gun, and if they ever want it registered well, tough, I refuse. I can pump 300 rounds thru it and it'll never jam. Correct on the aftermarket mags and maybe the reloads as both have caused me jams on other guns in my "arsenal". Another point is to go real easy on the oiling after you clean it. May also want to meticulously examine it for a small burr somewhere.
I've got buddies that own all makes; they all seem to work well with the exception of one of my buddys bushmaster; it too is a bit prone to jamming. No answers why either.

THEWIZ427- i dont mean to brag but all i shoot at the range is "Black Hills" reloads and i still dont get jams! its about 12 bucks for a box of fifty and they are very accurate. ( 55 grain )
although- i have never romped through the woods with it, ive always shot it in clean conditions like gun ranges or off the back of my F250 so who knows if in the "down and dirty" it might like to jam.
I've had it checked but have been told that since it's a national match model it's tolerences are tighter(who knows).I never buy reloads i reload myself,It saves me money.I was told to change powder and that seems to have helped a lot.BTW what do you use for mag's? All of mine are military issue i pick up from gun shows.
Of course most folks think i'm nuts cause i hunt deer with a 45/70

I only use the military issue magazines too. The rifle itself is a Colt Match Target Competition. The powder change sounds like a great idea too as some are "dirtier" than others and it def can cause problems. I suppose ya could go out and buy a bunch of winchesters and pump em thru to see if it jams with them. Just a thought.
I have heard several people who like their OLY's, but I have heard a lot of complaints also. My friend has one and it is stamped 223, not 5.56 Nato. I'm not sure if they are all that way or not.
I have a Bushmaster with an Eotech Holosight that is awsome.
My AR does not jam as of yet. I have run several hundred rounds through her before cleaning, and no malfunctions.
Also I don't know If I read correctly earlier, but the Bushmaster is not overpriced where I bought mine for $799.00
IMO, it is the Colt that can be overpriced at times.
My buddy has a colt pre-ban that is loose, sloppy, jams alot and isn't all that accurate (barrell may be shot out, its pretty old).
Oly arms is good...at least the top end the kid built for me
bushmaster...not to impressive
Knight sr-25 is king of the AR's...IMHO
Magazine capacity is based on the magazine...not the lower end as stated above...
