Lots going on in my life and it looks like I'll be moving across the country with my job again. On top of this some medical issues with my daughter have me selling my Mustang and I'm now looking at an older Ford truck to replace it with. I think I've settled on an Excursion with a V10!

Both of my SD trucks had PSD engines but I don't really care for the expense, complexity, and high repair cost anymore and the V10 has more than enough power for my needs. I'll probably be buying another enclosed car hauler and will need to be able to comfortably tow 10,000 lbs or so.

So this leads me to my question for you guys, what should I look for in an Excursion? I'm relatively familiar with the common SD issues such as balljoints, 4x4 hub issues, and the other common ones, but is there anything specific about the Excursions I should look for? One of my coworkers has an '01 that fits the bill that was recently in a wreck. It's rust free and in good condition, and he's looking at selling it once it gets repaired. The frame was bent, and I told him I'm looking for a lifetime transferrable warranty on the repairs, but if that checks out I'm thinking it would be a great deal because it's hard to find rust-free trucks this far north! It's an '01 V10 with 130,000 miles and he wants around $7,500 for it. What do you guys think?

Most have already talked about the mechanical stuff to look out for with the X but I'm telling you that there are very few vehicles that will compare with the X!

I've owned SD's (F250's, 350's, & dually's) but there is nothing like the X. I liked the X so much I sold/traded those others and I now own my 2nd X and not looking back!

They are a great machine. Not sure about what rear ends they use in what trucks and the X but I do know the rear diff. cover off the X fit out 94.5 F250 7.3. From what I seen the X rear end was identical to the rear end in our 94 besides the hubs. The hubs on our older fords are much deeper (larger) than the new ones I see like on the X. The bearing hubs on our 94 are about 6" deep while the X hubs are about 3.5-4" deep.

Decided to buy it!

But not sure if he's still selling it. After I told him a month ago that I wasn't going to do it his wife determined that she'd rather just keep it. After thinking for nearly four months I came to the conclusion that I'm just not going to find another one in this good of condition for the price. Last price was $8,000 for an Ex Limited V10 4x4 with 143,000 miles on it.

Craig, my coworker, want's to sell it, and so he's working on his wife.

you go through vehicles almost as much as I do. Where are you PCS'ing to?

edit: after looking at the tires...maybe see if the $$$ can be dropped just a bit. you're going to need tires for that trip

Yeah, it's pretty bad. I've had 12 vehicles in all, and only three of them were bought used. Trying to slow down a bit though and buy older vehicles that cost me less when I sell them in a year or two.

I have no clue right now. A few months ago they tried to PCS me to Wichita, KS. But my daughter was having lots of serious medical issues and therefore Wichita got canned. Then two weeks ago I was told Plattsburgh, NY for a report date NLT 15 October. But this won't work with my daughter's medical needs, so at this point I have no clue. But my projected loss date is 9/20/2012, so I had better find out soon! I'm a recruiter, so they could send me nearly anywhere.

I might, but I'm not sure. Looked to have around 6/32nds on them at the time, and this wasn't helped by the fact that it needs balljoints and an alignment. Part of the terms of the sale we worked out last month involved him covering both.

12 years I've been doing the Navy thing and I've gone through 15 myself. Only 5 were new

I'm still trying my damnedest to get into a PSD X, or super clean V-10 X. Just hasn't been in the cards yet

Best of luck to your daughter. I know how much that sucks. My twins has had a few issues on their journey. Have you looked at Ft. Lewis for orders? Madigan Army Hospital is great, and the Seattle area is pretty nice

I've heard that; a coworker just PCSed to Spanaway, WA back in September. I really don't care to be near a military installation though; the attitude towards the military in non-military towns is significantly different. I work 150 miles from our company, and 304 from our battalion. And I wouldn't want it any other way!

That whole area pretty much rocks IMO. HUGE Navy presence, Air Force/Army are neighbors. There is a little animosity. But for the most part it's really laid back. I was there for almost 6 yrs and never had an issue. Now Hawaii on the other hand...they blame Military for all their woes

If that X doesn't pan out, I highly suggest you Autotrader search for one in Texas. They're highly concentrated down there. Would be worth road tripping to get a good deal IMO. Plane tickets are cheap one way to DFW or Houston.
