Hi. I have a 1994 F150 Flareside with a 5.0 engine and a 5 speed transmission. Lately, when in 1st or 3rd gear, the shifter seems to have "moved" forward or something - when I shift into 3rd, I cannot without banding my knuckles on the dashboard. When in 1st, I can't grip the entire shifter. Anyone else had this problem and what is the most likely solution/repair? Thanks, Glenn
The shifter handle is attached to the shift rod of the transmission by splines and held there by a lock bolt. Apparently, your lock bolt got loose enough to let the splines wear & slip. Your **** is slightly rotated, too, isn't it? Pull the shifter boot & slide it up the shaft enough to examine the lock bolt. Remove it and the shifter shaft, and examine the splines. If they look useable, reinstall the shaft & tighten the bolt. You might find better instructions and diagrams here.
Thanks for the input, but I don't think I described my problem correctly. The shifter **** is fine - no movement or looseness - its the position of the shifter itself - it seems like its "ahead" or has "moved" forward about 2" or so. Are there shifter bushings that could have worn out? I hope this description on the problem is clearer. Thanks, Glenn
Thanks Steve. I re-read what you wrote and lifted the shifter boot and saw the spline had turned. I replaced the locking bolt and its good as new. I really appreciate your input. Thanks again, Glenn
