Go to a place online that sells headers, like Jegs or Summit Racing, look up the part number for a 79 with a 351m. Then look up a 81 with a 351m. If they are different part numbers, they are not going to fit.

I answered my own question, the headers for a 77 -79 will hit the firewall on a 80-81 351m. The left side fits fine. The fellow that had them for sale was nice enough to let me take them home and try them before I bought them..

You will find most manufacturers and retail stores do not like inventory. If something will fit many different models, they will keep that in stock and list it as so. I am sure you have run across parts that are actually set up to be universal, just for that reason, less inventory. If a header or whatever will fit several models, or they can make it fit several models with a little bit of modifications, they will do it.
