Oilpump driveshaft? help!

Is the driveshaft still in the oil pump or did it fall into the oil pan? Most of the shafts have a clip on them that prevents them from lifting all the way out of the oil pump so you can safely remove your distributor without it falling. If it has fallen to the oil pan (sorry for this) you will have to remove the oil pan. If you go to all this trouble you should buy a hardened shaft or chromoly one with the clip on it, unbolt the oil pump, slip the shaft in it and feed it up the tupe it goes into. Before you torque the oil pump down, check that you can lift the shaft up but it should hit the clip on the block before it comes all the way out of the pump. Then you are good to go. The problem is when one falls in the pan, the previous owner just takes the clip off and slides another one in because he is too lazy to remove the oil pan. I have seen one truck that had 3 shafts in the pan. Lucky they didnt decide to get caught in the rotating assembly. Hope this helps!!!
