I have a 93 f150 with a 5.0 and 120,000 miles and something weird happen while my dad was driving it home. Use to be his before it broke, now he's gettina new desile F250. He said it started running like crap in miami so he got it checked out down there and the guy said a valve was stuck open. He had to get home so he drive it and on the way it started making a metal on metal nose like a woodpecker hitting a tree. I figured the valve snapped under pressure, not the case when I got the heads off. Now I'm hoping a stuck lifter, but heard a stuck lifter wouldn't make a noise like that. My friend said could be rod knock and time for new motor. any anvice would help. i got top half apart and don't wanna put it together broke. Thanks
If the valve was stuck open there wouldn't be anything to keep the lifter on the cam and the cam slapping on the lifter can sound pretty deep. Not the best situation for the cam, and the lifter is probably gone. That's assuming the valve train stayed in place.
As long as you have the heads off you can run each piston about halfway down the cylinder and turn the crank watching the piston. There shouldn't be any lag or slack between the crank and the piston at mid-stroke.
Hope this helps.
