same old question

I am building a 1964 F100 short box for my dad. I have read on this site quite a bit here, and I have searched but not found the answer I am looking for.
I have access to two engines in my budget. I know both ran, and I plan on just converting to carb, and some mild bolt ons, maybe a cam.
Engine one is out of a 00 mountneer 5.0 and engine two is out of 86 E150 5.8.
I am looking for part access(like header options and cams) and horsepower for the dollar. I am not building a drag truck for pops, but I want the truck to let's say, be motivated.
Thanx

All stock the 2k Mountaineer 5.0 is the better choice, 9:2 CR with heads that flow well enough for 300+ HP and a factory roller cam. This motor just needs a cam and exhaust to be a real screamer.
In comparison the '86 5.8 is a turd, 8.5:1 CR thanks to smog heads with hugh 69cc chambers and a tiny flat tappet cam. This engine has more potential due to it's larger displacement but you'll have to replace the whole top end to see it.

Thanx conanski. I kind of knew the answer, but I needed confirmation. If I can save some cheddar on the engine and make the sameish horsepower, that frees up $ for more goodies.

One more option: take the heads off the 5.0 and transplant em onto the 351. Swap in a better cam while you're at it and top it off with an RPM airgap intake and Holley 80783 carb.
