dropping oil pan...?
I have a 1988 F250 HD with a 302 that needs a new oil pump and rear main seals due to neglect by the former owner. Does anyone know how to drop the oil pan without removing the engine? (I'm currently taking the heads off as well for reconditioning)
Thanks!
Considering the heads are coming off and you're going to be replacing the rear main seal, it would probably be a lot easier to pull the engine. You'll be taking the motor mounts loose to jack up the engine for clearance, removing the fan shroud so the fan doesn't break it (or bend the fan), intake is removed and associated wiring is disconnected, exhaust manifolds are either loose hanging on the pipes or removed, AC compressor and alternator already off to the side, let's see, what's left. Pull radiator, (one hose and 4 bolts, 2 cooler lines), one heater hose, starter and ground cables, torque converter and bell housing bolts and the hood. Plus, you wouldn't have to worry about stressing the tranny input if you need to drop the crank a little to get the seal in, plenty of room to work, you wouldnt have to slide the pan into position with the oil pump in the pan and try to hook up the oil pump (and shaft) through the narrow gap you have left let alone trying to stick the pan gasket into place upside down with not much room to work and have it seal. Been there, done that.
It would also be a good time to at least check (if not replace) the timing chain.
Hope this doesn't confuse the issue too much.
And welcome to FTE.
