it's top shifted...shifter appears to be part of the top cover from what i can tell. it's a traditional shift pattern...1 3

oh, and again, i've looked at that "motivegear" website (1st link) like 10 times today...everyone seems to wanna post it. it doesn't give concrete evidence as to what transmission i have. heck, it says the SROD wasn't used after 1983. my truck is an all-original 1987...how do you explain that? heck, it shows NO 4-speed being used in 1987...when it's fairly common knowledge Ford didn't offer a 5-speed (that i've heard of) until 1988. like i said, nothing concrete on that site.

from what i've gathered, i don't think it can be an SROD. supposedly, on an SROD, there's a "false fill plug" on the side, that if you try to pull it out, something inside the transmission will fall apart...there's no such "plug" on my transmission. only an actual fill plug, at an angle, on the passenger side. i'm starting to wonder if it's the T170FT (code-RTS)...also called a TOD. i dunno, i just need to find out...

thanks for the help guys!!
The ZF5 was offered in 87, at least with diesels and big blocks, not sure about them small blocks.

Ah ok, that's why I said "that I know of". I figured I might have missed a statistic...thanks! Now if I could just find a ZF5 for my Daisy...or better yet, a ZF6...although I'm not sure they ever made one that will bolt up to her block...

You should be able to swap a ZF 5-speed pretty easily. I put one in my '87 behind the 302. You'll need a 5-speed crossmember, support brackets, and floor pan insert (any 88-96 F150-F350 small block 5-speed, ZF or Mazda), a new clutch hydraulic line and slave cylinder for an '88 F250 5-speed, and a two-piece driveshaft. You will need to get a custom driveshaft since most of the factory ZF trucks used the 10.25" rear end which makes the driveshaft right at 3" too short for the 8.8". I started with a driveshaft for an F250 with the same wheelbase as my truck and had a driveshaft shop re-tube the rear half to get to the correct length.

Yea, I wanna swap in a ZF5...although I'm not "too" enthused since my OD is about the same ratio, from what I read (feel free to debunk this). I guess having 3rd in better spacing would be a good thing, and more gearing is always nice...

Now, my factory d-shaft won't work? Will it not spline in? Because my truck has the two-piece shaft from the factory...

Overdrive ratio of the TOD is within .01 or .02 of the ZF I think. The back half of the factory driveshaft will work, but the front half will need to be longer. The ZF has a fixed output yoke so it won't use the splined yoke that fits the TOD.

Oh ok, thanks bud! Maybe I'll get fortunate enough to find the driveshaft in the truck I get the ZF5 from...and better yet, maybe it'll be a RCLB.
