wheel caddy

Here is an idea for you boys with big TARS.
A friend of mine in Adelaide Au. Patented this a few years back.
You just use it like a fork lift, roll the tire on the rollers to line up the lugs.

I don't think he Mfg's anymore, but it makes putting a big tire on easy.

It comes apart and folds up for easy storage.
It came with a bag when new.

Wheel dollies. They have been around heavy truck shops for ages.

We don't have that luxury at our shop. We adjust the height of the axle to where the tire is just off the ground and use a bar to rotate and lift the tire into place. I got plenty of practice after 17 yrs there. Dollies are useless when we R&R 6ft tall tires on offroad equipment.

It's not that they don't make the "big uns", it's just that our company isn't going to spring for one. If we have repairs done on the larger tires, we sub them out and do minor repairs on the OTR and dumps in house.

There's always the redneck dolly too. I've used it on big rig duallys when the regular dolly was out of commission...

Get a sheet of aluminum about 3'x3' and lay it next to the truck wheel. Pour a few ounces of oil on the edge closest to the tire. Jack your truck so the tire just barely lifts clear. It's a small effort to drop it on the slip pan and slide it where you want it. Of course, ALWAYS chock your other wheels and never do this without jack stands.

The crow bar is way more efficient anyway. I say you see them around the shop because no one ever actually uses them.

Back when I worked on OTR trucks and trailers the company wasn't going to spend any money on fancy stuff like that. They said that is why we have you. Old school crow bar Baby !!
And to all you guys that work on big rigs for living "God bless ya'll" I kinda miss it until I see a tread like this. So I am sorry if I don't feel sorry for a guy who can't put his pick up truck on even if it's a 40" Maybe he can get a lesson from from one the boys that work with real tires. Speaking of which Roland I'll bet you are glad your company subs out the "6ft tall tires on offroad equipment" there is NO way I would want anything to do with that.
