This stuff is all great, love the mirrors and the magnet fun!
I have an issue though, I like the logic that how would anything get caught by the magnet that would not get caught by the oil filter? Are we trying to catch things before they get to the filter?
Also, the metal particles that would indicate real bad wear would be aluminum, right? It would be nice to find a way to collect aluminum bits in the fuel and oil.
To remove the metal particles from an oil filter you need one of these.
After you cut the top or bottom of the filter, which ever you prefer to call. You can remove the filter element to examine it for metallic flakes. Basically a big piper cutter.
Now I would think you could do the same at the Primary Filter. We would need to obtain some information on gaps and things at the primary filter, to see if you could get a magnet up there and in place.
I just filled my shopping cart with $200 in magnets! I'm like a kid in the candy store with this kind of stuff and I just can't help myself. Looking forward to spending some quality time with my 9 year old in the sand box...
Epic - I have bought from them in the past for some specific projects.
Something to keep in mind.
These are not toys.
They are brittle and can easily shatter.
You get a pair of them together and it is extremely difficult to get them apart. And you can hurt yourself doing it.
I would not let your 9 year play with them, even supervised..

Fair enough and point taken. I received a similar comment via private message and I appreciate you folks looking out for me (and Michael). I have no experience with magnets other than what is on the fridge. I did not order anything huge, just a couple of 2 X 1/2 X 1/2, some 1 X 1/2 X 1/4s and the biggest one 2 X 1 X 3/8. Also got a bunch of the small 300 degree discs for use on the filters. It's hard to image these little magnets are so dangerous but I will take your advice.
It was interesting to read the warnings on the big magnets:
I remember talking about the magnet on the fuel filter in Darren's thread.
Epic that is the site I referred Darren to....isn't it a great site? I learned more about magnets there too. They have a bunch of different ones and I will order from them when in need.
PITS...what if you glued a magnet on the end of that plastic oil plug, maybe it would be easier to remove the particles that way.
I do like EPIC's idea of slipping one inside and just magnetically attaching another on the outside but don't know how the oil and the nickle plating on the ceramic magnets will interact. Might have to try that one if the velcro doesn't hold up.
