Mazda M5R2 5 Speed - Can I change this O-Ring?
Hello,
I have a 1989 Ford F-150 with the Mazda M5R2 5 Speed OD.
I have tranny fluid leaking from the 5th/reverse counter lever O-Ring.
This assembly is located just below the Back-Up Lamp Switch, on the left upper side of the transmission.
The parts that supposedly can be accessed from the outside consist of:
(Ford Numbers)
* The O-Ring (99541-02001)
* 5th/reverse shift lever pivot pin (7Kl79)
* Reverse shift lever pin nut (7N428)
* Counter lever pin retaining plate (7C277)
* Counter lever pin retaining bolt (99796-06l2)
What I need to know is if I can remove the retaining plate, gain access to the O-Ring and change it, without something undesirable happening inside the tranny.
UNDESIREABLE: The sound of something inside the case falling to the bottom with a loud clank. Having to drop the tranny...
Thanks to all who can help.

the entire shift assembly comes up in one piece from the forks to the shifter so if your problems is there just remove the floor plate inside the truck and remove the top end of the tranny from there. nothing will fall to the bottom of the transmission doing it this way.
make sure to have the shifter in neutral when you lift it out and inspect the rubber face ring for weak spots that may leak later on.
my bad shoulda checked the date :P
