Yeah, modification, finding pieces, or finding a good one in the wrecking yard is all you can do with it being obsolete.
I like the plexiglass idea, with perhaps wide reflective tape, or pinstriping as backing.
I believe the Letters are still avaliable as they also fit the 1980-1984 panel.

shade tree repair
my reflector was broken at one end and was missing about six inches. i cut off the end enough to square it, cut it in half and installed them and mesured the gap in the center. i then cut an aluminum plate to fill that space. to secure it i put 3 small marker lights on it and put the screws thru the lights, plate and factory bezel. looks great! in order to secure the reflector panels i used 3/16 carrage bolts on the outsides and two license plate bullet lights at the center. sorry guys if yours is missing this wont help you. if anyone wants to see a picture let me know and i will ask my grand daughter to show me how to post it!

I took mine off and welded up the holes. Mine has a dented trim panel in a few spots but the reflector is perfect. It's going to go bye bye soon. I wonder if I should remove the reflector and sell it? Scratch that idea. I guess I'll put it up on Craigslist for cheap. Might be better than what somebody has.
