I left my headlights on my 1990 Ranger the other day when I went in to work and came out to a dead battery. I checked the door chime and it is audible if you stick your head under the dash. I would like to replace it so it is louder but I haven't been able to find one online. Is this a dealer part or should I go to the salvage yard? Maybe I haven't been looking under the proper name? Anyway, I need to get this fixed so I don't have any more OOPS! Thanks!
I had the same problem on my '91 Ranger - a weak chime. I got a couple of replacements from a salvage yard and both of them were weak also. Took one of them apart -easy to do - and adjusted it a bit and got a louder chime back.
Thy that before making a trip to the salvage yard.
Didn't know they were adjustable, interesting! I will have to try that. I wonder if the newer chimes will interchange with the older ones? I just might take the chime out of my 2000 and see if it fits in the 1990.
In my 1988 and 1990 Rangers, the chimes both quit. I took them apart and they're a metal disk supported by foam near an electromagnet. The foam had gone bad in both. I went to a hardware store and bought a rubber ring for each side of the metal. They're better than ever. The rings need to be the correct diameter and thickness. I definitely need those chimes. It was a while back but, as I recall, I needed different sized rings for the two trucks.
Thanks, rangerang, I did the o-ring trick and it is a little louder. I also got out the dremel tool and cut slots on the underside where the disk is. More sound comes out and I wonder why they didn't do that at the factory?
