Hi all,
I have a '72 F250 4x4. I have been trying to get a rough estimated towing capacity online and elsewhere but sadly been given vague or silly numbers. One source stated 1000KG (2200LB) while Wiki stated the '72 F260 (4X4 f250) GVM to be 4500lbs. My trucks Kerb weight alone is 4900lb.. In south Africa you may not tow more than the vehicles kerb weight and my license disk sez GCVM 4470kg (9834lbs). It has a payload rating according to license of 2783lbs.
Now i know towing has alot to do with ,ia, engine, gearbox and axle ratios etc. Havent got the axle ratios but she runs with a 351C V8 and a C6 tranny. What would a reasonable towing mass capacity be for this truck? I would thought id should be able to handle 3000-3500kg (6600-7700lb).
I do not intend to get a 100% accutate number but a reasonable one will do fine.

Back in the 90's I used to pull 5500lbs with my '70 F100 2wd long bed with 302(pretty sure I had already put 4.10 gears in it). That was 4000lb car on a 1500lb trailer. Did a fine job.
Now, I don't know what the factory rating was, but I did use a weight distributing hitch on it and had no issues at all running down the highway.

PrEvious owner wasnt to keen on maintenance i found out. Well atleast now with every service and repair i know she is beieng looked after properly even if my pocket dissagree...
