Transmission computer question

I have had 3 broncos and and F 150 in the past ten years. A 1992 Bronco a 1995 Bronco, and 1995 F 150 and now a 1993 Bronco all with speed density 351's and e4ods and 3.55 gears and limited slip diff. Now to my under standing the gear ratios in the transmission were the same though the the whole production of the e4od. But the 2 95's were different in the in several ways which I'm thinking was all related to the the programming of the transmission computer in the newer model trucks for better fuel economy. They also accelerated a little quicker through entire rpm range especially 1500 to 2500, and cruised at about 500 or so lower rpm at highway speeds 55-60. This was with the 92 and 93 and years apart and both had higher rpms at speed than the 95's. I saw somewhere about swapping a 94-96 transmision computer into an older truck. I can't seem to find the thread where it was mentioned. This is with my personal experience with 4 different trucks that I had for a long time and was very familiar with. They all shifted good and to all 4 gears and would shift back to 3rd if you turned off the over drive. It is my experience that the earlier e40ds were programmed a little different and caused you to turn more rpm. I'm thinking it may be something to do with when the torque converter locks up. Has anyone heard anything like this? Sorry for the long post.

That's because Ford did a major reworking of the E4OD internals between the 1993 and 1994 model years. Most of this was to improve shift points and help prolong the relatively short service life of many of the internal components from the pre-'94 era. It has less to do with the ECM than it does the internals that were used after the 94 upgrade. The changes were significant enough that Ford pulled ALL of the new stock E4OD internals from the shelves as of 1994. So IF you have an E4OD from an earlier truck that was rebuilt after 1994, you have all of the "94" upgrades and it will still work just fine with the older ECM.

Mine is a '94 and the previous owner said Ford did a warranty job on the transmission during the first year. I bought it with 150K miles. The RPM around town gradually increased until the PCM went totally bad. I sent the PCM to a shop in Houston and they repaired it. Now it drives like new at 40 MPH and RPM around 1300-1400 instead of around 1900 before the PCM died.

I always thought the only difference between the 5.0 & 5.8 E40D's were the solonoid pack in the tranny?

It is, but we are discussing the differences in model years not engine/transmission setups and the E4OD was reworked between 93 and 94.

also running a larger then stock tire and not reprogramming the PSOM will cause the E4OD to not shift properly or when it should.
