hey everyone
....i have a '77 dent with 460, 140,000 orig. miles.Has anyone had an intermitent leaking rear main seal?....sometimes it leaks a drip or two, sometimes a small puddle.Does the crank have a groove worn in from the seal?...logicly when something leaks intermitently like this, it would suggest something is out of round, and the only thing moving is the crank in the seal....am i missing something obvious,or is the crank no good? ....thanks in advance.
yes its a common problem with them any time i pull a motor out its automatic to change out the rear seal as they will get hard over time the cranks usualy dont get a wear groove in them but check any ways and if you do do it your self you need to loosen the main caps a bit to lift/drop the crank to install the seal and *note the way the seal lip faces before removal* this is paramount to sucess or faillier
....thanks miotti....i've learned that it's possible to put an easy sleeve over the crank where the seal rides, and as i only plan on doing this once, have you heard if this is successfull or not ?
yes the easy sleave is for the front seal i have used them my self many times you may want to heat it up,use gloves to install it makes it slide in due to the sleave expanding better the rear crank has grooves at aprox 45 degree angle that rides on the lip of the seal so i have never heard of one for the rear also the face of the flexplate mount is there
