I'm getting ready to change the head gaskets on my 89 E-150 302 due to water-in-oil type trouble. This engine has 163k on it and runs fine, no evidence of valve or compression problems.
I'd like suggestions of what else to check and/or replace while I've got it apart. I guess if the gaskets look good when I pull the heads, I'll look deeper, but I'm hoping for the best!
I would run a compression test . I would not be surprised to see that the intake gaskets are leaking and that is how the coolent is getting into the engine oil is getting water in it . Take a look at the spark plugs. If they or one looks "steam cleaned" that is evidence of water in the combustion chamber .
You may be able to rent a radiator pressure tester .
this tester has a pump on it that will allow you to pressurize the cooling system and look for water leaks and or hissing/bubbling sounds .
Cheeper then removing the heads , and may save you alot of down time on the truck!
