What is the difference in the load carrying capacity of a bumper hitch and an actual frame mounted trailer hitch. Is it that much that it would be worth going for the frame mount? If so, what is better, Class I, II or III?
The hitch on the bumper can handle 5000lbs and a class III hitch mounted to the frame is rated at I believe 7500 lbs. The hitch is an easy install with just 8 bolts in already existing frame holes and the hitches I have seen are around 150 dollars. Hope this helps
Another thing to look at too is that with a reciever type frame hitch you can lower or raise the ball to better suit your trailer.
Most of the time a bumper mounted ball is too high for most trailers.
Like Racerguy said being able to get different height ball mounts is a very nice feature. There is also the things you can buy that go into the reciever such as cargo carriers/bike racks/grills and on and on and on.... If I was just going to tow something 1 time I'd be temped to use the bumper. If you own a trailer or are going to tow aften I'd get the reciever.

Forgot to add in my previous post....
If you buy a hitch don't mess with class 1 or 2. For your truck get a class III or IV. The class 1 hitches are only good to I think 2,000# and class II are good to 3,500# I think. The class III is good to 5,000# and the class IV is good to 7,500 I believe. I don't even know if you can buy a class one hitch for a full size truck?? If you can I doubt you would save any money. I do know that you get get a class III for less then $150 for sure and I sometimes see them onsale at autoparts stores for like $110 or so. You do have to remember though that the reciever does not come with a ball mount or hitch ball (none that I've seen before at least) so you would have to add that cost to the reciever.
