This is where I'll be spending the spring and summer. Haven't found a single spot where it's rusted through. Hauling things in a restored Wimbledon White bed probably isn't the best idea, and I'm still on the fence about a permanent liner.

I mentioned earlier that when I got Festus home, I discovered the breather hose was packed solid. Not just dirty, or with some straw in it, but packed solid. Enough dirt and hay got past that deep-fried air filter to fill the hose, and the oil filler cap. It caused a big enough issue that a few weeks later when I had the valve cover off, I found an exploded PCV valve rolling around on top of the cylinder head, near the rear rocker arm. (The PO had replaced the PCV valve at some point, apparently not noticing or caring that the previous one had exploded, and/or wondering where it might have got itself to.) Ford Tough.

When I was flushing all the crap out of the hose and cap, whatever remnants of a filter inside that cap were lost among the debris. I bought a new hose-free cap for $4 at NAPA, cut back the inlet enough to fish out the filter, and cut it down to fit inside my cap. Easily done with a bit of prodding. I actually cut the "new" filter to size diameter-wise, then cut it in half (top to bottom, like two pancakes) so I have an extra filter. Stuffed it in there and fished it into place. In these photos I had pried up the tab on the underside to remove that locking crosspiece, to replace the gasket. The new one was fiberboard, and I successfully tore it putting it on, (note tear at 8:00) so I cleaned up the old rubber one and reused it.

Um, this may be an odd question, but.......

Why not just buy the correct cap? Or get one at a junkyard?

Seems like a lot of work to me.

Nothing wrong with the cap, just wanted to get it refilterized. And I haven't found a replacement, yet. Seen here sans breather hose.

The oil breather cap on my 6 cyl was fine too. Until I went to replace the breather hose.

The PO put a band clamp around the house and the plastic nipple that sets in the grommet on the cap. I ended up breaking the nipple for the hose and bought a little breather from the auto parts place like what you got. I had to bend the tabs that twist into the valve cover to get my breather tight though.

It's amazing how 25+ year old plastic can turn into glass.

Ain't it true! Almost every hose I've replaced has been frozen on, so I started slicing them open with an X-Acto and peeling them away.

I appreciate that, thanks. This forum and a Chilton manual have been a Godsend. Availability of most parts that are needed is a big plus, of course. I'm about $2500 in on top of the $900 purchase price. I've been REALLY fortunate so far in a lot of areas, that $376 clutch job being one of them. The other larger expenses have been $213 for two front tires, $172 for the carb, $200 for the master brake cylinder and booster, $156 for the exhaust, $106 for the radio and mounting plate, $83 for the battery, etc. I think the most positive thing about these trucks is that even a serious setback - new motor, transmission, rear end - won't break the bank.

BTW, I've counted my blessings more than a few times reading some of the threads here. I inherited a Frankencarb but other than that this truck could have pretty much been pushed out the back of the factory and sat in a field for 30 years. Some of the tales here about what some fellas discovered under the hood - makes me cringe.

***** Joe , you may want to check the "free to a good home" thread. It's a place where people list parts that really dont have much value to the owner , but , wouldnt be right to throw away either. You could list the Frankencarb in it. It may be a Godsend to another member looking for a cheap fix for their truck, but , next to useless for you at the time. I posted some C-6 tranny parts in it . I havent found any takers ,but , maybe sooner or later someone will need them. I check it whenever I see some new listings just in case it is something I need. That thread is in the sticky's at the top of the page.

I like your resto thread. It has good detail in it as well as picture rich. It looks like your doing that old F 100 a great service. It might be something your kids hang on to after your gone or might make someone else like minded a nice vehicle one day.

Went junkyarding this morning; hit three junkyards with one strikeout, one single, and one homer. Scored all these goodies. I was after body plugs and hood supports, and found a couple of '81s that still had a few plum parts. Dome lens, washer fluid cover, window cranks, power steering cap, license plate bulb cover, air cleaner bracket, starter/ground/solenoid cable, dash screws, jack and tire tool bolts, wire guard, and more. The hood supports new are $40 each (mine are pretty rusted) - went home with all this for less than $15.
