I have a 92 f150 302 with a mazda 5 speed and 69,000 miles. I want to chagne the trans fluid and was just wondering what you guys think is the best to use. I figured I'd ask you guys before purchasing some since you guys are the experts. Thanks.
Well I just used Havoline Mercron/Dexron III trans oil. Is that a good brand to use. I also added in some Lucas oil and it seems to be working very well. Shifts way better into gears. IS this type of trans oil OK to use on my Manuel Ford? I hope so, Thanks.
You're asking for the best, not what the average joe uses, right?
First, it will be a synthetic - not a standard with an additive. Second, take a good look at Redline's MTF (yes, MTF, not ATF - they designed it specifically for manual trannies that originally came with ATF).
But 'best' is a relative term, and based on where you are located, you may be able to get away with something thicker than ATF or MTF, namely Mobil 1 syn Gear Oil. I changed a mazda manual car tranny from ATF to the (100% synthetic) Mobil 1 Gear Oil, and had smooth shifts and no problems with it (even during the very cold winters). But some around the FTE boards caution against going with anything that didn't come with the truck.
If you're worried about straying from what came in it OEM (ATF), go with Redline's MTF.
I have a friend who is a Ford Transmission mechanic and has been for years. He told me to put quality Mercon, even synthetic, but to top it off with a quart of 10w-30 synthetic oil. Not sure exactly why, but his 5 spd F-150 has over 150,000 miles and trans. works great, shifts smooth, no grinding. Plus he works on them everyday.
So far I have followed his advise on both my 94 F-150 4.9 5spd and my 89 Mustang LX 5.0 5spd for several years and have had no problems, knock on wood!!
