Help on Auto hubs
I seem to have "THE" problem with the auto hubs on my 90 F150, the other evening I drove around in the back field and threw it in 4hi to run it for a bit. After I got through I took it out and backed up prerequisite 10’ish feet and parked it. Well on the drive in the next morning I hear a grinding noise that grew into a clunk, clunk, kachang as I stopped. Now it appears that the hubs aren’t unlocking.
Is this indeed the case?
I’ve tried to get them to unlock by backing up even several hundred feet applying brakes and not, turning steering wheel and driving straight. They have unlocked temporarily only to start grinding again as I approached 35-45mph. When it does that I stop and throw it into 4hi and all is well.
The funny thing is when I was backing up, sometimes I could hear a whine like there was a solenoid or something trying to move but not able to. It was not a gear type whine more like an electrical or vacuum device whine.
I’ve searched all through the archives and didn’t see anything related to this, mostly everybody saying theirs died and switched them over to manuals.
Was there anything like this as a controller on the 90-91 F1150 XLT Lariat 4x4? It’s supposed to be a 90 but I’ve been told they don’t come with EAOD and it has that too. It does have a 91 351 (5.8) in it as the previous owner took it in for it’s first service that year (91) and it seems the techs left out the drain plug and killed the engine. So FoMoCo replaced it for him. I and he just didn’t know if the trans was replaced also but that’s what she’s got
What would cause this noise?
I’m willing to switch over if need be, and could I just want to make sure (money’s tight) before I spend $80 only to find it’s something else.
Also how does the auto hub lock the axle anyway? I don’t see how it would work to start with. Hey thanks guys for any and all help!!!

The auto hubs on my 83 F-150 died after the first time i wheeled it. Drivers hub locked up at 50 mph to the point that the wheel itself locked up while skidded to a stop. Had to beat the hub with the tie iron to unlockit. If you change the hubs you might need the hub nut conversion that changes to the pin style retaining ring in it.
