I am the proud owner of a 1970 Highboy with a NP435, devorced dana24. I recently picked up a Ranger Torque Splitter I am going to install. Also, I want to swap out the 435/24 devorced setup for a 435/205 married setup while do'un this install. I have located a married 435/205 from a 1978 truck that had 135K miles on it.
Now, I understand that swapping out the 24 for a 205 is almost a bolt on conversion in the devorced setup. In other words the 205 will bolt right up to the 24's cross frame mount. Is this correct?
My plan is to install the Ranger Splitter (which moves the 435/205 back 7 1/2 inches), install the new 435/205 married combo while using the cross frame menber from the 24 relocated to the proper spot. This is where I need ya'lls opinions. Does anyone see any major problems? Will the exist'un 24's cross member work for this?
I have already taken into account that using a married 435/205 combo with my low pinion dana 44 front increases the drive shaft angle and this isn't desirable. By adding the Torque Splitter, the 205 will be back 7 1/2 inches from a normal setup which eases the angle alittle. Also, I don't 4x4 that much so the U-joints on the front shaft don't get used much anyway. BTW, I have manual locking hubs too.
Also, I understand that I will have to alter both the front and rear driveshafts and also the speed"o cable issue.
lee,I do not know about a Highboy but my 71 F-100 4x4 was pretty east to convert to an NP 205 from a Dana single speed.The 205 bolted to the transmission and has a bushed frame mount on the driver side frame and that is all.I had to build a mount plate to bolt down the adapter between the 435 and 205 as the mount was about 3" further back than the Dana single speed mount position.The married case you bought should mount to a cross member and to the driver side frame with a rubber vibration bushing,that is all I have on mine. I used a speedometer cable out of a 79 Bronco as my old one was about 6"too short,it plugged into the back of my speedometer after removing the plastic lock and making a small cut in the cover so it would slide on easier.Even though there is no way to clamp the cable on to the speedometer, mine has never pulled out.You might have to lengthen your reverse light wire.You will have to field measure to see if the Dana 24 cross member will line up like you need.I just bolted a 3/8" steel plate to the old transmission mount that hung off the back and drilled that to accept the stock transmission bracket plus it gained me about 1-1/2"more ground clearance to boot.I was thinking of adding a Ranger torque splitter but being a short bed I do not know if I will have enough room left for proper drive line angle. I also thought a solenoid for the Ranger splitter would be cool.
1. I will plan on relocating the 435 cross member and modifing it to mate to the extension housing of the married 435.
2. I will need to locate a mount from a 67-72 F100 transfer case and install it to the drivers side frame rail to hang the 205 from. Does this sound correct?
Did your 205 mount to the single speed transfer case mount without mod's?
lee,I had to bolt a 3/8" plate down to the top of the cross member that extended about 8" to the rear of the cross member.Then I lined up the center mount for the 205 like the single speed mount and marked it on the plate.Then drilled it out and mounted it back on to the cross member then bolted the center mount to it. If you did not get the driver side bracket mount with your transfer case try a wrecking yard or Tom's bronco,Jeff's bronco graveyard or maybe someone here knows where to find one. You really need one to keep the transfer case from rotating under load.The 205 case will need the adapter mount made for the 205 as it also locates and has a mount for the 205 shifter.
