Hey Bill,
I need help with this part number.
I have a 1979 Ford F800 Dump Truck, the pinion seal is leaking.
I removed it and I am not having any luck with the number that is inside the seal rim. could you please take a look at it? any help would be nice.

You have a thread going on this truck already. Why hijack an old thread?

Bill,
Thanks for your knowledge, energy and devotion to this topic.
Can you help me understand the history of my L9000, currently with dump? The title shows the 11 character VIN as W901VY06924 and the above data plate as N70FVCE6022. I am wondering if the cab might have been replaced at some point and the DMV is sticking with the VIN per the original registration.
I am hoping the information you provide for all the data plate fields will help me source parts. I believe the engine is a Cummins NH230 but in view of the age of the truck, that might not be original.
Thank you.
Dennis

I believe the engine is a Cummins NH230 but in view of the age of the truck, that might not be original.
It's possible that a used door was installed, because the info on this Warranty Plate decodes to a 1978 LN700 w/a 391 4V gas engine.
---------------
900 series truck is a 9000 with a diesel engine. The title VIN: W901VY06294 decodes thus:
W90 = LNT900 Diesel.
1 = Cummins model NTC-230 6 cylinder 855 cid diesel, based on the fact that the VIN decodes to a 1977. 1973/76 is a Cummins NH230, 1978/79 could be a NH230 or a Cat. 3406.
V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.
Y06294 = 1977.

New to the site, and hoping this pays off !!!
Looking for any quick assistance. I'm trying to decode the vin for a truck I'm trying to buy in Arizona. I'm in Pittsburgh so doing as much research as possible before I loose this big fish !!! Time is of the essence obviously.
1974 Ford WT900 / W9000 Cab Over
318 Detroit Diesel 2-Stroke
8V71N with a Roots Type Blower
Eaton Road Ranger 13 speed.
The ad claims the vin is Z9T0VT06124 & trying to find anything out about things pre 1980's LargeCar seems to be impossible!
Any assistance would be great !!!
Thanks in advance,
Michael
~ After a little research from NumberDummy's replies ( Thank you Mr. Bill for all that you do in these forums ) I came up with this ...
Thru 1980, truck VIN's have 11 digits / 1961/80:
Z9T0VT06124
First 3 entries are series code (Letter followed by 2 numbers).
Z9T0VT06124
4th digit (Usually a letter) is the engine code.
B = Cummins model V903 8 cyl 903 cid Diesel or Caterpillar model V190-3208 8 cylinder 636 cid Diesel.
Y = Cummins model C-180 464 cid 6 cylinder diesel.
Q = Caterpillar model 3208 636 cid 8 cylinder diesel.
Z9T0VT06124
5th digit (Letter) is the assembly plant code.
V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.
R = San Jose, CA Assembly Plant.
K = Kansas City, MO Assembly Plant.
U = Louisville, KY Assembly Plant.
Z9T0VT06124
Last 6 digits is serial number:
1961 - 66: 6 numbers
1967 - 77: Letter followed by 5 numbers
1978 - 80: 2 letters followed by 4 numbers.

Bill,
Thanks so much. Mystery solved so far as I am concerned. The engine is definitely Cummins small cam 855 (confirmed by stamped rocker cover number 149786). Exact year is not so clear from passenger side block casting numbers - 21012 with stamped 4 on pad adjacent to casting. Further down the block toward the front is a cast 12 4. And even further down is final casting that looks like plate with screw heads that seems to read 8-5-73 but could also be 8-6 75 (or something else). Here are a couple of images. I am not asking you to research any of that, but thought you might be interested FYI.

The 3rd digit is a number, not a letter. I need to know what the number is, because Z9 by itself decodes to several different series' of trucks.
The 4th digit is the letter O .. not a zero. It decodes (1974/77) to a Cummins model NTC350 6 cylinder 855 cid diesel.
The truck was assembled at the Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant (V) and it's a 1974 (T06124).
The VIN does not contain any TRANS or AXLE info, this info is stamped on the Warranty Plate.
Depending on what series truck this is, it's either riveted to the left door face below the latch or riveted to the inside of the left door.
Time is of the essence? Most people would not want a truck this old, as all the parts are obsolete, will be difficult to find and expensive if you do.
It's also huge, so forget the two car garage or the driveway unless it's as long as Route 66!
Where is Bill Mazeroski and Harvey Haddix when you need them?
