5.4 F250 SD oil pump / timing change question

5.4 F250 SD oil pump / timing change question.

drove my truck for 120 miles oil pressure went to 0 and pulled over truck died, locked up, got it started an hour later after it cooled down, trailered it home and pulled the motor, today I pulled the valve covers and timing cover off of the motor, and to my surprise the left side timing guard was broke and shredded in the bottom of my oil pan,

i orgiginally thought my oil pump was bad but upon inspection, my oil pickup tube screen was clogged, I’ll be putting a new oil pump in anyways and also new timing chains tensioners and guards in the morning,

my question is, when I pulled the chains off I didn’t mark them at all and have no idea how to put them on so that it will be timed, also is it possible that on the left side the chain jumped a tooth when that guard broke? What would you guys do in this situation?

It's easy timing these engines heres a diagram to help you out.

Your chains will have painted or stained marks to where they will need to align to the crank sprocket (one chain link painted) and to the camshaft sprockets (two chain links painted)

Ok

What if my heads (top end that the cam phasers are bolted to) sorry I don’t know the terminology for engines, but anyways what if those got moved? Would it matter?

Yes thats why you have to re-time the engine. As long as all marks align you should be set.

Once you believe you have it properly timed spin the engine via the crank snout with key installed using a 32 or 33mm socket on a long handled ratchet----do this gently so IF you have any valve interference you'll feel it and can stop immediately. (I'm not sure the exact socket size as the video by Brian doesn't say, I bought a 32mm for my own 5.4 and it was too small by just a tiny bit.)

The video link above is probably one of the best for this procedure---follow it carefully.

Best of luck with this!

First off, do not turn the engine with the chains off, the pistons will hit the valves and bend them. If you took the chains off and have not turned the engine then put them back on and then turn the engine until the timing marks line up, This could take up to 28 crankshaft rotations. Once the timing marks are where they're supposed to be you can take the chains off again and move them to where the colored links meet the timing marks, like they should. Your other option is to loosen all of the camshafts so all of the valves close, then you can freely turn the crank and camshafts without the chains installed until the timing marks line up, then torque the cams down and install the chains.

Oops I turned the engine without the chains on! That’s what I get for trying to learn as I go!
