I have a 84 F150 with a 302 and an AOD in it. The distributor cap has always coroded fast on this truck. You can clean them off and in two weeks the posts will be covered in black gunk. Is this common? Is there some kind of elect. grease that should go on them to cure this? The truck now has 222k on it but like I said it has always been a problem.
Also, can you advance the timing on this old goat to get it to perk a bit?
If you park your truck outside especially over grass condensation will collect on everything including the inside of the engine. Yes you can advance the timing a couple of degrees at the time until you start to spark rattle under load, then back off a couple of degrees.
This is not really condensation type of corosion. It is heavy black carbon biuld up. The post erode from the center out and after while there is very little flat surface left.
Aluminum is unaffected by moisture - look at a Coke can or an aluminum radiator. What causes most distributor terminal corrosion is the ozone produced by the spark. Ozone is a strong oxidizer.
But "black gunk" sounds more like the shaft seal is going out and you have a lot of blowby, sending crankcase vapor into the cap. Check your compression.
Its not like black "gunk" as in leaking oil buildup. Its black carbon like substance. Dry and flaky. Can be scraped off with a key to reveal heavy corosion on the tower itself. Has always done it since the truck was new. Of course I was 11 then, but the old man remembers it doing it then too.
